Rating: 4/5

Description: I watched this to get the awful remake off my mind and I still love it! It’s not perfect, but it’s not meant to be; it’s meant to be rough around the edges, something which the remake completely missed. It’s got a great balance of crazy, comedy and shock-horror and fun, which makes it enjoyable every time!

Plot Summary: A newly engaged couple have a breakdown in an isolated area and must pay a visit to a castle of a mad alien scientist which leads them on a strange journey.

Movie of the Week: The Defiant Ones

21 Oct

Title: The Defiant Ones

Director: Stanley Kramer

Release year: 1958

Notable cast: Sidney Poitier, Tony Curtis

Genre: drama, thriller, classics

Recommended for: classics fans

Rating: 4/5

Description: The film is dated today, but in it’s era a very courageous, as well as outrageous to some , film. Although not the strongest basic plot, it is the relationships between the characters and their development that draws you in and makes this an great film, and the messages their relationship projects which were inconsiderable to some at the time. Both actors perform well in the film, yet I think Poitier does an outstanding job!

Plot Summary: Two escaped convicts chained together, white and black, must learn to get along in order to elude capture.

Title: On the Waterfront

Director: Elia Kazan

Release year: 1954

Notable cast: Marlon Brando, Karl Malden

Genre: drama, crime, classics

Recommended for: everyone should watch this at some point

Rating: 4/5

Description: PRETTY (damn) TERRIFIC! Very powerful due to some great actors/acting and iconic scenes.

Plot Summary: An ex-prize fighter turned longshoreman struggles to stand up to his corrupt union bosses.

Favourite quote: “Shouldn’t everybody care about everybody else?” -Edie

Here is one of the most iconic scenes in film history (below). I think it is so iconic because of the choices made by the actors and director. It could have been a typical fight, a scene full of anger and bitterness but instead Marlon Brando chose to push the gun away, and Rod Steiger fed off that. It became a scene of heartbreak and loss.
